Consultants in Laboratory Medicine : Laboratory Resulting Technology

Consultants in Laboratory Medicine acts as the pathology component to its laboratory partners by using a unique service-oriented approach which is built on integrated teams. These teams incorporate not only CLM and affiliated pathologists, but also national experts and clinicians who are specialists in the area in which they advise the company. The teams work to integrate both medical and laboratory data to enhance the quality of laboratory medicine.

CLM develops systems and methods to add value to information created in clinical and anatomic pathology. The value-added step is achieved primarily by application of information technology (IT) to lab-generated information. The three primary areas of IT applied to laboratory data are the Laboratory Medicine Consultation Program, the Lab Web Portal, and the Lab Images Web Archive.

The Laboratory Medicine Consultation Program is built upon internally developed software systems and intellectual property that consists of copyrighted rules and expertise in the successful deployment of lab applications and computer generated interpretative reports. For a more detailed overview of the Laboratory Medicine Consultation Program, click here.

The Lab Web Portal (LabWorks™) is licensed from Atlas Medical. The portal is a patient centric, order entry and results reporting web-based system. It has been integrated to the ProMedica Misys (Laboratory Information System) and CoPath Plus (Anatomic Pathology Information System). It enables office-based order entry and results reporting with high functionality and low training burden to decrease result delivery time. Laboratory information generated is sent into the LabWorks and Laboratory Medicine Consultation Program systems. Paper copy is also sent via the courier service and/or faxed to the ordering physician. The Lab Web Portal can be accessed via the Laboratory Portals section of our website, found under Physician Resources.

The Lab Images Archive stores gross and microscopic images taken by the physicians. Digital cameras attached to pathologist's microscopes and grossing stations interface into an imaging software database. Our physicians use PAX-it™ software to take a series of images of their specimens and store the images in the database. The pathologist selects the most representative images and they are transferred to a web server. The web server integrates the images into the Atlas LabWorks portal, and has its own interface where images can be retrieved via accession number. The Lab Image Archive can also be accessed via the Laboratory Portals section of our website, found under Physician Resources.

The PAX-it system is licensed from Midwest Information Systems, Inc. It is built on a relational SQL database and has replaced the kodachrome slides that have been the historical standard when taking microscopic images and gives our pathologists the flexibility to collaborate in many different ways. The PAX-it system integrates with the pathologists' e-mail client, allowing images of a specific case to be sent to affiliates, clinicians, or national experts. The PAX-it system also allows the pathologists to create PowerPoint presentations to be used to aid in the education process of multi-disciplinary tumor boards.

Everything resides on a network with a gigabit backbone and redundant data storage to ensure the maximum reliability for all of CLM's facilities.
